The Lady Lunas saved their best for last with a very thorough, efficient and dominating defensive 54-13 win over Maui High for their 15th consecutive MIL championship. The Lady Lunas were led by their captain and leader, Susi Namoa with 18 points. After going down with what looked to be a very serious leg injury in the early 4th quarter of last night's game against Baldwin, I was not sure if Susi was going to even play in this game. In addition, Ashley Akamine was also injured in the Baldwin game. So you can imagine, I was SO HAPPY AND RELIEVED to see Susi and Ashley dressed up and ready to roll when I arrived at the gym tonight! Susi - the ultimate "BeastMode" warrior like another #33 before her Ana Lauese - showed no ill-effects from her ankle injury. She was all over the court, steadying the team on both offense and defense. She even wiped up the wet spots on the floor. Best of all, EVERYONE on the team stepped up their game especially on the defensive end. The Lunas pulled away in the 2nd quarter, outscoring Maui High 20-4 en route to a 29-6 halftime lead. Abby Akamine poured in all 10 of her points in the decisive 2nd quarter. The Lunas continued their dominance in the 3rd quarter, eventually forcing the game to go with the running clock as the Lunas lead exceeded 30 points. For me, this was great as it gave me a chance to hopefully make it back to Lahaina to catch the ending of the Lahainaluna boys basketball game against Baldwin. Unfortunately, despite the running clock and the boys game starting 30 minutes late, the boys game was over by the time I reached Puamana. Thankfully, ESPN Maui AM900 was broadcasting the game so I got to hear the 4th quarter action as I was driving. Congrats to the Lahainaluna boys on their come-from-behind 61-51 win. All in all, a GREAT day for Lahainaluna basketball.
