Overtime didn't start well for the Lunas. Kona scored easily on the initial possession - too easy. Then on the Lunas' ensuing possession, TJ Galoia's pass slipped out of his hands - thank God he was able to snatch it before getting sacked for an 8-yard loss. Then back-to-back false start penalties saw the Lunas staring at a seemingly insurmountable 3rd and 28. If the Lunas failed to score, GAME OVER. Then Nainoa Irish threw a perfect pass, releasing it just as he was getting knocked down and Josh Tihada laid himself out and made an incredible catch. FIRST DOWN! The Lunas gave themselves a chance and they took advantage of it, scoring to tie it up at 38-38. The teams proceeded to go back-and-forth: Konawaena seemingly unstoppable with runs up the middle and scrambles by the QB. Lunas equally unstoppable with their sweep runs by Ragudo and Tihada. Both teams' kickers, Pablo Rico and Harry Hill coming up clutch with their extra points and field goals. Lunas had a victory snatched from their hands in the 4th OT, when they had a lead and seemed - to 99% of the those at Aloha Stadium - to have stopped the Kona receiver a yard short of the first down marker on 4th and 13. Unfortunately, that other 1% was the referee, who generously awarded the receiver forward progress to the 10 yard line - First Down Kona. With new lease on life, Kona scores to extend the game to another overtime. Finally, in OT Number 7, Lunas got a HUGE break go their way. Kona got down to the 1 yard line on a Chauncy Mariani-Louis' run. However, his helmet came off and Kona's center apparently suffered an on-field injury. As a result, on 3rd and goal from the 1, Kona did not have Mariani-Louis in the backfield and a brand new center. Kona tried to do a quick snap QB sneak. The Lunas' Nate Somera, in his only play of the game at nose guard, crabbed the heck out of the center and busted up the play on the snap of the ball. QB Ewing mishandled the snap, the ball tumbling foward into the end zone where an alert Luna Elijah Oliveira-Kalalau pounced on it to end the Kona threat. THe Lunas' offense took the field with renewed energy, and 4 straight runs up the middle by Joshua Tihada on direct snaps got the Lunas to the Promised Land. Touchdown! After four hours and ten minutes, 83 offensive plays, 123 defensive plays, 440 yards of total offense for the Lunas, 524 total yards of offense for Kona, 7 overtimes and 145 points combined, and 3,768 photographs, the Lunas emerged STATE CHAMPIONS once again! Back 2 Back!
