Action from Lahainaluna's come-from-behind 22-19 win over Maui High. Highlights include two safeties recorded by Lunas' defensive lineman Kainalu Kailiaau, both thanks to punts by Kailiaau that pinned the Sabers deep in their own territory, including one after his line drive punt miraculously bounced around and avoided going out of bounds before being downed inside the 5 yard line. Lunas were led by the rushing of Aki Miyamoto and Aliksa Pihda, including an electrifying kickoff return for TD by Pihda to open the second half and give the Lunas the lead, 8-7. The Sabers answered back with a fade pass to the end zone to make it 8-13. The Lunas' answered with another safety to make it 10-13. Then the Lunas scored a touchdown on a run by Miyamoto where he looked to be stopped a few yards short of the end zone, but he managed to move the pile and fell into the end zone to make it 16-13. The Sabers scored another touchdown to retake the lead 16-19, with the extra point blocked by Aki Miyamoto. He appeared to land into the leg of the Maui High kicker after he blocked it, which played a factor in the end. Things looked bleak with just under 5 minutes left in the game. But the Lunas drove down the field. On 4th and 5, the Lunas completed a clutch pass to Kawehi Gillcoat to get the first down and preserve the drive. On the ensuing 4th down, the Lunas' called time out to set up the game-tying field goal from about 35 yards out. Instead, Nyles Pokipala-Waiohu took the snap and lobbed a high pass to 6'3" Liloa Kapiko, who caught it at around the 15 yard line and proceeded to break at least 4 tackles before ending up in the end zone to give the Lunas the 22-19 lead with 25 seconds left. The Sabers made it interesting. They were able to drive it to the Lunas' 19 yard line with 3 seconds left. However, without their regular kicker Kalia Kapisi, the Sabers were forced to go for it instead of kicking a FG to tie. The pass went incomplete and the Lunas escaped with the win. Lunas improve to 1-1.
