Another championship game for the ages. Waikapu gave top-ranked Lahaina all they could handle for 3 quarters, taking a 22-20 lead at the half then holding Lahaina scoreless in the 3rd quarter to lead what looked to be an insurmountable 10 point lead 30-20 heading into the final quarter. That's when Lahaina stopped jacking up 3s and started taking the ball to the hoop. Waikapu lost its top player Bueno to an apparent ankle injury while scoring a layup, causing them to go into a stall game, doing dribble hand-offs along the perimeter of the 3-point line trying to run time off the clock. In a tale as old as time, Waikapu was playing not to lose while Lahaina became aggressive saw momentum slowly but sure shift to Lahaina's side. Ian Cabanilla opened up the quarter with a driving layup to make it 22-30. Kade Cunningham drained a three and Ian hit another layup to draw them within 5, 27-32. Then Bueno got hurt on the layup and with 4:40 left in the game, Cash Palma followed big brother CJ's footsteps from 5 years prior, taking over the game with clutch buckets. Cash drove down the middle of the lane through 5 defenders for the layup to make it 29-34. Noah Flores then scored two points to make it 31-36. With Kade Cunningham using his athleticism and length to harass Waikapu's point guard Zion Milar the full length of the court and disrupting those dribble handoffs and Waikapu's ability to run its offense, Cash continued to apply the pressure. Another drive down the lane with a nifty lefty layup, drawing the foul and making the And-1, drew Lahaina to 34-36. After Milar hit a free throw to make it 34-37, Cash Palma drove the baseline and hit the layup to make it 36-37 with 1:46 left. After some hard fought possessions, the score remained 36-37 with 12.5 seconds left when again, Cash drove the lane and was fouled. Mr. Clutch swished the free throw to tie the game at 37-all. He bricked the second free throw, but Kade Cunningham skied high for the rebound to retain possession as Coach Luke called a timeout before Kade could get tied up. Out of the timeout, Cash drove from right to left and was fouled. He calmly and coolly drained the first to give Lahaina its first lead since the first quarter 38-37. He missed the second but Kade was able to deflect the ball out of bounds with 1.67 seconds left in the game. Kade again deflected the inbounds pass out-of-bounds, but inexplicably, no time ran off the clock. This gave Waikapu one final chance at the win, but the ensuing three point shot from the corner was long, and just like that, the comeback was complete. Lahaina is the 2019 Menehune Boys basketball champs. Lahaina outscored Waikapu 18-7 in the decisive fourth quarter. Cash Palma scored 9 of Lahaina's final 11 points to bring the championship back to the West Side.
